Community Support & Blue Economy Program

Community Support & Blue Economy Program

AMCO

June 22

Context

As part of its efforts to conserve aquatic megafauna along Cameroon's coast, AMCO is sometimes required to recommend restrictions to local communities, particularly with regard to certain fishing, hunting or natural resource exploitation practices. These measures, although necessary for the preservation of ecosystems, can impact the livelihoods of populations.

It is in this context that AMCO has set up a Blue Economy program that aims to offer sustainable economic alternatives such as ecotourism, livestock, agriculture, etc. The aim is to reduce human pressure on marine and coastal ecosystems while improving the living conditions of coastal communities. This program promotes the economic inclusion of populations in conservation efforts, by focusing on participatory approaches adapted to local realities.

Project Objectives

  • Improving the living conditions of communities through the diversification of sources of income.
  • Reduce pressure on aquatic wildlife by providing viable alternatives to unsustainable fishing practices.
  • Strengthen local ownership of conservation projects by integrating communities into an economic dynamic.
  • Develop local capacity in entrepreneurship, sustainable agriculture, aquaculture and ecotourism.
